Garmin WebUpdater

Garmin WebUpdater is a Windows program from Garmin for updating the software on compatible Garmin GPS devices. A wizard guides the user through the update process. For newer units, such as the SP 2720 and SP 7000, it performs voice and other updates, and it also supports updating Garmin USB mass storage devices.

The software requires Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later. It also requires .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, and a current version of .NET is installed if needed. Windows Media Player 11 or later is required as well, which is available as a free download from Microsoft. WebUpdater runs only on Windows-based computers; Garmin offers a separate Mac version.

For some unit updates, the program clears user memory, including 'Recent Finds' and 'Favorites'. Routes, tracks, and waypoints should be backed up to MapSource before updating. The wizard displays notes, such as warnings about data loss, during the process.

WebUpdater is not compatible with Palm and Pocket PC devices, fixed-mount marine units, chartplotters, fishfinders, or some discontinued units. It does not perform Beta updates. The program can handle updates for several connected devices in one session and checks for its own updates on its first page.

Recent versions have addressed stability, program performance, communication with Garmin and update servers, and GTU10 compatibility. Version 2.5.1 added error reporting, overall progress display for multiple updates, and a Select All/None checkbox on the Multiple Updates page. Version 2.4.0 introduced data integrity checks to confirm that update files were not corrupted during transfer from the Garmin website.
